Biography

Efi Moutafi

Efi Moutafi was born in Athens and pursued her studies in interior decoration at the Athens Technological Institute (ATI) while also training in painting under Spyros Vassiliou.
Her professional journey commenced in 1964 as a decorator. She later expanded her repertoire to include illustration work, notably contributing classic illustrations to the esteemed Pehlivanidis publishing house, and creating captivating children’s books. Simultaneously, she began exhibiting her artwork.
Efi has curated 18 individual exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions across Greece, France, Spain, Cyprus, and Italy. Renowned art critics such as Beatriki Spiliadis, Dora Rogan, Vasos Kountouridis, Nikos Alexiou, and Stelios Lydakis have lauded her work.

WHAT CRITICS SAY

Her artistic contributions are enshrined in prestigious institutions like the Naval Museum of Chios, Piraeus City Hall, Museum of the City of Athens, Vorres Museum, as well as numerous private collections both domestically and internationally.

From 1978 to 1987, she helmed the YDROHOOS gallery in Kolonaki, leaving an indelible mark on the art scene.

As noted by art critic Vassos Kountouridis, Efi’s oeuvre eschews superfluous design abstractions, instead embracing simplicity and a profound understanding of visual space in her acrylic works, which often depict everyday life in compositions marked by clarity and coherence.

Conversely, her watercolors exude a lyrical quality, characterized by Japanese austerity and a transparency of color that bespeaks a serene sensibility of exceptional depth.

Efi Moutafi is a proud member of the International Federation of Women and the International Federation of “Independent Artists,” headquartered in Paris.
